By Vince Leggett and Tonya Taliaferro   Release Date: February 2008

As part of Arcadia Publishing’s Black America Series, the title is a collection of rare images and informative captions chronicling the history of African-Americans traditions, customs, and culture related to life on the Chesapeake Bay inside Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis. The Chesapeake Bay, the United States’ second largest estuary, has created a unique, viable legacy for African Americans. Readers will travel to the Annapolis of the past through this volume of lovingly gathered never before seen photographs including:

  • Ella Fitzgerald taking a break during a set at Carr’s Beach
  • James Brown exiting his tour bus at Carr’s Beach
  • Daily beach frolic and the Sparrow’s Beach Amusement Park
  • George Phelps, the first Black Deputy Sheriff in Anne Arundel County and a variety of other significant Annapolitans
  • First Baptist, Mount Moriah, and Asbury Churches
  • The U.S. Naval Academy legacy and historic Bates High School

Authors Vince Leggett and Tonya Taliaferro underscore their commitment to preserving Anne Arundel’s past while paying homage to Black America's coastal community traditions with this treasured photo history. This publication project represents the BOC’s continuance of its 25-year commitment to preserving the history and culture of the Chesapeake Bay.
